Puget Sound Restoration Fund

Puget Sound Restoration Fund (PSRF) is a Washington-based nonprofit organization. Founded in 1997, PSRF is dedicated exclusively to restoring marine habitat, water quality and native species in Puget Sound. We pursue restoration collaboratively with industry, tribes, government agencies, private landowners and community groups and we take a non-activist, project-oriented, broadly inclusive approach to our work. As an organization, we are committed to a vision of a clean and healthy Sound that is productive, full of life and capable of sustaining us.

Noteworthy Items

  • December 9, 2011: Olympia oysters and Pinto abalone are two native species receiving a big boost this week as Governor Chris Gregoire and Dr. Jane Lubchenco with NOAA unveil the National Shellfish Initiative – a broad agreement among federal and state agencies, tribes, and shellfish growers to restore and expand Washington’s shellfish resources to promote clean water and create family wage jobs in rural areas. The restoration of native oyster and abalone populations is a key feature of the Initiative. Specific actions include a $200,000 NOAA grant to the Northwest Straits Foundation to support native oyster enhancements in the North Sound and a $560,000 NOAA grant to Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife to bolster pinto abalone populations. Puget Sound Restoration Fund looks forward to implementing key components of these recovery efforts. We will also be partnering with NOAA to establish a hatchery breeding program for native oysters to increase seed production that meets established genetic conservation guidelines.
  • 2012 CSA memberships are available for the Port Madison Community Shellfish Farm on Bainbridge Island.  Call today or sign up online to receive oysters once a month from May through September.  Proceeds from shellfish sales go towards water quality improvement projects on Bainbridge Island.
  • Over 900 people celebrated Oyster New Year at Elliott's Oyster House on November 12, slurping over 24,000 oysters in a mad dash for Puget Sound's finest local fare. Elliott's generously donates a portion of the proceeds to PSRF's Henderson Inlet Community Shellfish Farm--last year, that amounted to $10,000!
