Announcing the Henderson Inlet Community Shellfish Farm (HICSF) CSA! Olympia’s first oyster CSA will begin operation in October 2010 and continue through our harvest season, ending in April 2011. By purchasing a CSA Oyster Share you become a HICSF member and a stakeholder in maintaining clean shellfish growing areas in Thurston County. CSA Oyster Shares can be purchased at three different membership levels (download the sign-up form for descriptions).
HICSF is operated by community volunteers from the Henderson Inlet watershed and the greater Olympia area. The farm is managed by Puget Sound Restoration Fund, which started the farm in 2002 to focus community attention on Henderson Inlet water quality and access to our local marine resources. We do this through on-site education and by encouraging the community to become involved in efforts to restore clean water and shellfish harvesting. Read more about the history and community involvement in the Henderson Inlet Community Shellfish Farm here.
We are selling our Henderson Inlet Pacifics, perfect on the half shell, on the barbeque or in your favorite recipe. As a HICSF member, you are encouraged to participate in a harvest on the farm during our harvest season. HICSF work parties are scheduled monthly and announced through our volunteer email list; this is a great experience that no oyster lover should go without!
If you would like to purchase a CSA Oyster Share or just volunteer, please fill out this form and send it back to PSRF along with a check for your CSA Oyster Share.Memberships are available on a first come first serve basis, so don’t wait!
Harvest and Pickup
Deliveries of HICSF CSA Oyster Shares are made weekly to the Olympia Seafood Company, on the waterfront at 411 Columbia St. in downtown Olympia between the Wine Loft and the Budd Bay Cafe. HICSF CSA members need to make a “reservation” to schedule an oyster pickup, for each delivery of their oysters. You can do this by picking your delivery dates ahead, using the calendar on the membership form.Adjustments to your delivery schedule can be made by emailing brian@restorationfund.org.
Henderson Inlet Community Shellfish Farm OR "The Little Farm that Could"
Mucking around in the productive ooze of Puget Sound is what this film is all about. Launched in 2003, the Henderson Inlet Farm gets the whole community out on the beach seeding and harvesting oysters. Henderson Inlet is an incredibly productive marine system with a rich history of oyster culture. But the only way we can keep getting food from Henderson Inlet is if we keep the water clean. The same is true for many other bays and inlets in Puget Sound. This short 14-minute film features an eclectic and motley crew in the South Sound who are producing community-grown oysters to create tasty incentives for pollution control that everyone can enjoy.
